The Center for Technological Risk Studies (CERTEC) is an organization whose objectives are research and education in the various fields of technological risk.
It was created in 1992 by the Technical University of Catalonia and the Institut d’Estudis Catalans (Institute of Catalan Studies).
The Catalan government has certified CERTEC as an independent organism to evaluate risk analysis studies (RA, QRA, SMS, etc.) in order to fulfil the Spanish regulations related to major accidents (RD 1254/1999).

Who are we?
The CERTEC is constituted by lecturers, researchers and PhD students.
Its research programmes concern various aspects of technological risk and environmental impact, such as accident identification, mathematical modelling of major accidents (fires, explosions, toxic releases, etc.), transportation of hazardous materials, environmental
impact of accidents, etc. CERTEC also performs advanced research in the field of forest fires and monitoring methodology developed using infrared thermography. Several of these programs are carried out within the framework of international collaboration agreements,
whilst others cater for companies or the government. The CERTEC also investigates accidents for insurance companies and for the courts.
The Centre for Technological Risk Studies also carries out activities in the field of education: it organises courses, seminars and meetings. It also has close international relationships that lead to collaborative research projects and to the exchange of
researchers and students.
Where are we?
The CERTEC is located within the Department of Chemical Engineering at the School of Industrial Engineering of Barcelona in the Polytechnic University of Catalonia.
